Governor’s House exhibition

A small exhibition space within the historic Governor’s House orientates visitors to the castle, helping them to contextualise what they will see on their climb to the top of this ancient, defensive pyrometry.

Abound worked alongside HES’ in-house interpretation, collections and architectural teams to create the new exhibition. The tight budget called for a simple yet impactful design. The display included cased objects and carved stones, along with some digital media and a hands-on element. Meanwhile, as a Scheduled Monument, nothing could be fixed to the fabric of the building.

Abound’s solution was to create a ‘ribbon’ plinth, which incorporates showcases, open display objects and back-lit graphic totems could be incorporated into. This was also used to accommodate electrics for the lighting and active climate control units for the cases.

This complex project also required liaison with other services outsourced by the client, including a graphic designer, mount-maker, showcase manufacturer and the exhibition contractor.
